The history of RUinart
Maison Ruinart has three centuries of history, from which it draws the strength of its creations. It dates back to the 17th century with a Benedictine monk and visionary named Dom Thierry Ruinart. One day, he heard about a new "sparkling wine" developed in his native Champagne, which was highly appreciated by European royal courts and promised a bright future. This visionary decided to pass on his knowledge and vision of the champagne trade to his nephew, Nicolas Ruinart.
Then, in 1729, ten years after Dom Thierry Ruinart's death, his nephew Nicolas drafted the founding act of the Maison in Reims. Ruinart thus became the world's first champagne house, and its creation coincided with the birth of the "Age of Enlightenment" in France and the rise of the French art of living, which continues to be a pioneer. This period also marked the birth of rosé champagne, which was shipped for the first time in 1764.
Before exclusively selling champagne, Maison Ruinart acquired its ancient Crayères in the mid-18th century. These chalk cellars, dug beneath the city of Reims, were used to age its precious bottles of champagne. Today, these galleries are open to the public, classified as a historical site in 1931, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
The Ruinart family continued to enhance the champagne house until the early 1960s. It then partnered with the Moët & Chandon brand, and in 1987, the group was acquired by LVMH, the world leader in luxury goods. Today, Maison Ruinart is owned by MHCS, a subsidiary of the LVMH group for wines and spirits.
Ruinart and its commitments
A 17-hectare vineyard on the Reims mountain, supplemented by purchasing contracts with partner winegrowers. Recognized worldwide as the leading champagne house and symbol of an art of living, Ruinart is also strongly committed to meeting today's environmental challenges.
First and foremost, the house promotes biodiversity to combat climate change, which has a harmful impact on the vine. The company works with a collective replanting platform, Reforest'Action, and also partners with the Conservation National organization to protect trees. The company has also been a pioneer in sustainable viticulture since the early 2000s. The vineyards have been doubly certified Viticulture Durable en Champagne and Haute Valeur Environnementale since 2014. The House constantly encourages its partners to achieve this dual certification and has been providing administrative and financial support since 2018. Reducing their carbon footprint is also part of their commitments with the use of sustainable energy and recyclable packaging.
Ruinart's chalk pits
Ruinart's historic cellars date back to Gallo-Roman times, and were acquired in the mid-18th century by Claude Ruinart, son of founder Nicolas Ruinart. Hand-dug, these cellars stretch over eight kilometers in length and are divided into three levels. The deepest measure 38 metres in height under vault.
Cathedrals of underground chalk, these cellars offer ideal conditions for the fermentation and maturation of Ruinart cuvées, with a total absence of vibration and constant temperature and humidity. The cellars are now open to the public, allowing visitors to discover the history and ancestral know-how of the House of Ruinart.
Classified as a historic site since 1931, the Crayères have also been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2015.
Ruinart's expertise
Manual harvesting in Champagne typically spans around three weeks when the grapes reach maturity. Once the grapes arrive at the cellar, they undergo gentle pressing, and the must is transferred to thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks. A first alcoholic fermentation at low temperatures begins, producing still wines. This is followed by a second fermentation, known as malolactic fermentation, which reduces the wine's acidity and gives it greater suppleness.
Under the direction of cellar master Frédéric Panaïotis, the teams evaluate the visual, olfactory, and gustatory qualities of the wines to preserve the "Ruinart taste" and create an ideal, balanced, and harmonious blend. The blends are then bottled, with the addition of yeast and sugars to trigger a second alcoholic fermentation. For Dom Ruinart cuvées, the bottles are laid on slats using the traditional know-how called "l'entreillage."
The bottles then undergo a slow maturation process in the Crayères, where the temperature is maintained between 10 and 12°C, offering optimal aging conditions. The bottles are then riddled mechanically using gyropalettes to replicate the traditional hand movements, ensuring consistent and perfect quality. As for the rarer cuvées, these are still riddled by hand.
Finally, the bottles are disgorged by a mechanical process to remove the sediment formed during the prise de mousse, and then dressed by hand, ready to reveal their dense texture and surprising freshness.
The cuvées of Maison Ruinart
At the heart of all the Maison’s cuvées, Chardonnay is the signature of Ruinart's taste. This grape variety, primarily from the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, is known for its sublime minerality, lightness, and elegance.
Ruinart Blanc de Blancs is a 100% Chardonnay from different years (20 to 25% reserve wines from the two previous years), sourced from a majority of Premiers Crus in the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims for its aromatic finesse, wines from Sézannais for roundness, and wines from the north of the Vesle valley, bringing a touch of freshness and lightness.
The house's signature cuvée, R de Ruinart, is a blend of 40% Chardonnay, 40 to 45% Pinot Noir, and 10 to 15% Meunier, including 25 to 30% reserve wines from the two years preceding the base.
With a history dating back to the 18th century, Ruinart Rosé was the first rosé to be created. This balanced blend is composed of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vinified as red wine, bringing the distinctiveness of this delicate wine.
