- Rhône Septentrionale -
Renowned the world over for the exceptional quality of its wines and the jewel in the crown of the Rhône wine region, the Côte-Rôtie appellation is the most northerly and one of the oldest vineyards in France. Covering some 280 hectares, AOC Côte-Rôtie is spread over 3 communes: Ampuis, Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône and Tupin-et-Semons, with 73 classified “lieux-dits”, on the right bank of the Rhône, south of Lyon. This is where you'll find some of the Rhône Valley's most prestigious crus.
The history of Côte-rôtie
The history of Côte-Rôtie dates back to antiquity when this wine-growing area centered around Ampuis, an ancient Greek, and then Roman trading post. During this period, Latin authors such as Martial, Pliny the Elder, Columella, and Plutarch praised the Côte-Rôtie wine, known as “Viennese wine.”
During the Middle Ages, the reputation of the wines from Ampuis was confined to Lyon, which absorbed the production. The Renaissance later allowed these wines to gain renown in other provinces and at princely tables in England, Russia, Prussia, and France.
The Côte-Rôtie vineyard reached its peak in 1890, with its vines spread across 300 hectares and producing wine of great reputation. Unfortunately, in the 19th century, the phylloxera crisis, along with the two world wars, led many winemakers to prefer working in the emerging industry, leaving a large part of the vineyards abandoned.
Finally, in 1980, the vineyard was reborn from its ashes thanks to a new generation of winemakers who had to invest in buildings, equipment, and distribution networks. The appellation thus experienced renewed dynamism and forged an international reputation. This revival was partly possible due to the low cost of land at the time.
Today, Côte-Rôtie is renowned through the Ampuis market, which attracts more than 10,000 visitors each January and has been part of the "Vineyards & Discoveries" label since 2012, promoting wine tourism destinations in France.
The Côte-Rôtie terroir
A gem of the Rhône wine region, the Côte-Rôtie appellation is the northernmost of the Côtes du Rhône. Located on the steep slopes of the right bank of the Rhône River, it covers an area of approximately 280 hectares spread across three communes of production: Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis, and Tupin-Semons, with 73 classified lieux-dits. Situated between 180 and 325 meters in altitude, the vineyard is characterized by its stone walls and narrow terraces on dizzying slopes, which can sometimes exceed a 60-degree incline.
In Côte-Rôtie, there are two distinct terroirs: Côte Brune in the north and Côte Blonde in the south. According to legend, Lord Maugiron, owner of La Côte-Rôtie in the 16th century, named these two lands in memory of his two daughters. He divided his lands between them so they could marry with a good dowry. One of his daughters was blonde, and the other was brunette. The distinction between the two terroirs is also linked to the geological origins of the soils. In Côte Brune, the soils are dark-colored and rest on a bedrock of mica schist, rich in clay and iron. By contrast, Côte Blonde rests on a lighter rock composed of gneiss and migmatite, producing a siliceous soil. The rock has numerous fractures that allow the roots to draw water and essential nutrients.
Facing south, the vineyard enjoys exceptional climatic conditions with a temperate continental climate known as "Lyonnais." This climate combines warmth and Mediterranean influence with the freshness and humidity brought throughout the year by the continental effects of the Burgundy lands to the north. Winters are mild, summers are hot and sunny, and autumn brings mild temperatures with regular rainfall.
Côte-rotie,
the kingdom of syrah
The king grape of the northern Côtes du Rhône, Côte-Rôtie wines are mainly made from Syrah ( minimum 80%). This red grape produces wines of great quality, rich in tannins and with strong aromatic potential.
Syrah may or may not be complemented by Viognier (maximum 20%). A local white variety, it brings finesse, aroma, complexity and femininity to the wines. Côte Rôtie is the only appellation where Viognier can be added to Syrah.
The style of Côte-Rôtie wines
Renowned for its elegant red wines full of finesse, Côte-Rôtie wines are dark, almost black in color, evolving to garnet hues over time. Characterized by great aromatic complexity, the nose presents aromas of black fruits, red fruits and spices. When Viognier is present in the blend, floral aromas such as violets appear. With age, the nose evolves towards smoky notes (coffee, toast...), meaty aromas (bacon) and cooked or candied fruit. On the palate, the wines are characterized by a fine balance between acidity, power and tannic structure. Made from different soils, Côte Blonde wines are livelier, while Côte Brune wines are softer. In its youth, a Côte Rôtie will be tannic and fruity; a few years in the cellar will enable it to refine its tannins, making them finer and more delicate.

Located in Ampuis, the Guigal estate produces outstanding Côte-Rôtie wines such as the famous “Château d’Ampuis” and the renowned wines “La Mouline,” “La Turque,” and “La Landonne,” which are single-vineyard cuvées belonging to the elite of Rhône Valley wines.
- Delas: This estate ranks among the great names of the Rhône Valley, with particular recognition for its parcel-based approach and crus in the Rhône Valley's most renowned appellations: Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage. In the northern Rhône, their two main domains have established the estate’s reputation: Domaine des Grands Chemins in Crozes-Hermitage and Domaine des Tourettes in Hermitage.
