Château Montrose, a 95-hectare single vineyard, is located 5 kilometers north of Pauillac, in the Saint-Estèphe appellation overlooking the Gironde estuary. Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855, the estate is one of Saint-Estèphe's elite, producing powerful yet elegant wines with great ageing potential.

the history of Château Montrose
The history begins in 1815 with Etienne Théodore Dumoulin, who discovers land that once belonged to his father through Nicolas Alexandre de Ségur. He instantly has the intuition that vines could grow on this site and produce great wines. He therefore invests in planting the vineyard and constructing the necessary buildings for cultivation and winemaking. Forty years later, due to the quality of his wine, Château Montrose is classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé during the 1855 classification. Until his death in 1861, Etienne Théodore Dumoulin continues to expand and develop his vineyard, which reaches the current size of 95 hectares.
In 1866, Mathieu Dollfus, an Alsatian industrialist, takes over the estate. To improve winemaking and cultivation methods, he constructs and renovates buildings and modernizes the facilities. A pioneer in human resources, he creates a true little "village of Montrose" with ideal living and working conditions. During the phylloxera crisis, Mathieu Dollfus installs a windmill pumping groundwater to flood the lands, thus saving the vines of Montrose.
Following the death of Mathieu Dollfus in 1886, the Charmolüe family, wealthy owners of several châteaux, acquire the wine estate. Over three generations, the family guides the property on the path of stability and excellence from 1896 to 2006, maintaining its place among the greatest Grands Crus Classés of the Médoc.
The brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues, lovers of this vintage, acquire Château Montrose in 2006. Through an exceptional renovation project that would last seven years, Montrose marks its entry into the 21st century. The project includes a new 1,000 m² cellar dedicated to the custom aging of its great wines, 3,000 m² of photovoltaic panels, reducing the estate's carbon footprint, as well as maintaining the architectural ensemble of the château in the 18th-century style typical of the Bordeaux region.
CHâteau Montrose,
the property
Located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, north of Pauillac, Château Montrose benefits from a gravelly hill dominating the Gironde estuary for over a kilometer.
The presence of the estuary is an important factor, as Château Montrose is one of the few estates to enjoy this privileged location, allowing the vines to benefit from a temperate microclimate favorable to cultivation. The exposure to the wind and sun on the Montrose hill is also valuable for the vineyard. The rows are planted in a north-south axis, allowing the grapes to benefit from the alternating sunlight throughout the day, while the northwest winds help to remove excessive moisture during rain.
The exceptional terroir of Château Montrose places it among the most privileged wine-growing lands in the Bordeaux region. The vineyard is historically unique in that it surrounds the château, the cellars, and the operational buildings, which facilitates vineyard work.
The vineyard is located on terraces with gravelly soils mixed with sand and a clay-rich subsoil. This allows the vines to draw the necessary water from deep within the soil. The largest plot is two hectares, while the smallest covers just a few ares. Each plot has its own unique characteristics, differing from neighboring plots.
The grape varieties at Montrose are typical of the greatest Médoc wines, with a strong dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon. The variety of soils also allows perfect ripening of plots of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, producing wines of great complexity.

Château Montrose know-how
The harvest, done manually, spans about one month. The teams select the grapes based on their ripeness. Upon arrival at the vat room, the bunches are manually sorted before being destemmed, passed through optical sorting, and sorted again manually. The berries are then placed in vats.
During vinification, 92 thermo-regulated stainless steel vats allow for the creation of "custom-made" wines. Carried out with respect for the raw material, each step reveals the expression of the terroir and the style of Montrose. The maceration lasts a maximum of 25 days, respecting the fruit. During the racking, the lots are separated, the pomace is meticulously pressed, and then transferred to barrels. The noble pressings will be included in the Grand Vin. Blending tastings begin in December. Samples are tasted and classified according to their profile and style. They are then selected and blended based on the desired personality for each wine.
The wines are placed in barrels in the cellar. The Grand Vin is aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak barrels. For the second wine, La Dame de Montrose, it is aged for 12 months in 30% new barrels, and for Tertio de Montrose, 12 months in 20% new barrels. During aging, traditional racking operations are carried out every three months. This helps to separate the clear wine from the lees deposited at the bottom of the barrel. Fining in barrels is done using egg whites to refine the wine and soften the tannins.
Château Montrose Cuvées
Château Montrose has three cuvées. The first is the Grand Vin de Château Montrose. Made from a rigorous selection, this great wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. It is structured, tannic, with all the finesse and elegance of a Grand Cru Classé, and has exceptional aging potential.
La Dame de Montrose is the estate’s second wine. Produced from the same terroir as the Grand Vin, it is a wine dominated by Merlot, supple and silky, with pronounced red fruit aromas. It was created in 1983 in homage to Yvonne Charmolüe.
Le Tertio de Montrose is the third blend, coming from the youngest vines and the pressed wines, meeting the same quality standards as the others.
