the history of Château Phélan-ségur
The story begins with an Irishman named Bernard O'Phelan, who left his hometown in the early 19th century to settle in Bordeaux. He married one of the daughters of Daniel Guestier, a well-known local merchant. In 1805, Bernard Phélan acquired his first estate, Clos de Garramey, in Saint-Estèphe, then the Ségur de Cabanac estate, from which Château Phélan-Ségur was created. Here, he built a château focused on wine, with the vat room and cellar located in the heart of the house. On Bernard's death in 1841, the estate passed to his son Frank, who devoted his life to raising the reputation and quality of the estate's wines.
The estate then became the property of Xavier Gardinier until 1985, and then of Philippe Van de Vyvere, a Belgian industrialist and his son since January 2018. These Bordeaux wine enthusiasts continue to build on Château Phélan-Ségur's reputation. A benchmark of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, the Bordeaux marketplace lists it in the Grands Crus Classés Assimilés category.
Château Phélan-Ségure, The property
A 70-hectare vineyard, Château Phélan-Ségur is located near the Gironde, in the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Overlooking the estuary, it benefits from a temperate oceanic climate offering ideal conditions for vine growth. It also protects the vines from climatic excesses such as harsh winters and hot summers. Situated on the Saint-Estèphe hilltop and plateau, the terroir is composed of a thick layer of gravel deposited by the river. Gravel and pebbles are coated with clayey sand (clayey gravel), creating an exceptional terroir. The grape varieties include the Médoc duo of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 39% Merlot, complemented by 1.5% Cabernet Franc and 1.5% Petit Verdot. The king of Médoc grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon brings power and structure to the wine.
The expertise of Château Phélan-ségur
WORKING IN THE VINEYARD
Vineyard manager Luc Peyronnet attaches great importance to work in the vineyard. That's why he has implemented a “viticulture raisonnée” approach that takes the environment and working conditions into account. He studies the subsoil and adapts the grape varieties and rootstocks accordingly. A passionate man, he ensures that young vines flourish and that older ones remain healthy. As regards respect for the soil, the vines are ploughed without the use of weedkillers, the soil is fertilized organically and biodiversity is preserved. Prophylactic methods are also developed to avoid the use of phytosanitary products, and the implementation of environmentally-friendly biotechnical pest control banishes the use of pesticides.
FROM THE CELLAR TO BOTTLING
Once the grapes have been carefully harvested by hand into small crates, they are transported to the vibrating manual sorting tables, where they are gently crushed. Fermentation then takes place over ten days, with regular pumping-over and punching-down, specific to each batch. At Château Phélan-Ségur, 39 vats are used for this precise parcel-based vinification. Maceration takes place over a period of twenty days, during which the wine is tasted daily to determine the optimum date for release. After pressing and separation of free-run and press wines, the wine undergoes etonnage. Once in barrel, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation to gain in suppleness and roundness. The wines are then blended, and ageing continues for a further twelve months in 50% new barrels. During this period, the wines are racked “à l'esquive”, a traditional technique that is time-consuming and sometimes restrictive. Finally, the wines are bottled in the spring.

The Grand Vin of the estate, Château Phélan Ségur, comes from the sublime terroir of Saint-Estèphe, where power is dominant. The identity of this wine is characterized by its elegance, finesse, and great precision, revealing the purity of the fruit, the balance of its structure, and the silkiness of its tannins, all with a natural freshness. After a long aging period, it reveals a rare complexity, with a harmoniously integrated oakiness. This Grand Vin is also known for its aging potential of several decades, opening up new aromatic horizons such as the warmth of spices, blackberry aromas, and leather.
The estate’s second wine, created in 1986, is named after Bernard Phélan’s son, Frank Phélan. Made from 15 hectares of old vines and a selection of vines under ten years old, it respects the original values of the château. Combining intense, crisp fruit with a fine structure and silky tannins, it is aged for 14 months. Its roundness and suppleness also allow it to be enjoyed in its youth.
The estate also offers a third cuvée, La Croix Bonis. Linked to Château Phélan-Ségur, it comes from selected plots of the estate, mainly Merlot, and is aged for 12 months. With a beautiful expression of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, it is a fleshy, supple wine full of fruit with soft tannins.
