Château Haut-Bailly is owned by Robert Wilmers, American banker, who brought him all his passion and the financial means to make this wine a Cru Classé des Graves. One of the peculiarities of Château Haut Bailly is to produce only red wines, whereas in the appellation Pessac Léognan its illustrious neighbors, Carobonnieux, la Louvière, and Malartic Lagravière produce red and white wines. Spread over 28 hectares of vines, the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc produces a racy, elegant, harmonious and very versatile wine. This noble and refined wine represents the perfect balance between finesse and concentration. the history of château haut-bailly
The origins of Château Haut-Bailly date back to the 15th century, when local archives first mention the estate's lands. At that time, the land was considered excellent and suitable for vine growing. A century later, the Goyanèche and Daitze families acquired these sublime plots and began to harmonize the vineyard.
In 1630, the estate attracted the attention of Firmin Le Bailly and Nicolas de Leuvarde, two Parisian bankers who loved Graves wines. They joined forces to buy the property and invested a considerable amount of money in it. It was at this time that Château Haut-Bailly was born and entered an era of prosperity. The estate then passed through the hands of different owners, ambitious and seduced. Among them were Thomas Barton, Christophe Lafaurie de Monbadon and his son Laurent, former mayor of Bordeaux in 1805.
1872 marked a turning point in the history of the estate. Alcide Bellot des Minières, known as the "King of Winegrowers", acquired the property and built the famous stone Château that we know today. Thanks to this, the wines are positioned on the market alongside the First Classified Growths.
Following the death of Bellot des Minières, Château Haut-Bailly went through a difficult and unstable period which resulted in regular changes of ownership until 1955. Despite this, the reputation and quality of the wines remained intact, allowing the château to enter the Graves classification in 1953.
The year 1955 marked a new era with the acquisition of the estate by Daniel Sanders, a wine merchant of Belgian origin. With the help of his son Jean Sanders, they remodelled the vineyard and built new cellars to give the wines back their style and reputation.
In 1998, Château Haut-Bailly became the property of Robert G. Wilmers, an American banker and Francophile who loved the great wines of Bordeaux. Wilmers is personally involved in all strategic decisions and oversees the evolution of Haut-Bailly while respecting its history and heritage. He also entrusted the management to Véronique Sanders, granddaughter of Jean Sanders.
Today, the estate is managed by Véronique Sanders and the Wilmers family, in order to perpetuate the commitment of Robert G. Wilmers (deceased in 2017) to excellence and quality. Under her leadership, Château Haut-Bailly continues its quest for exceptional wines, respecting the history and terroir of the estate.
Château Haut-Bailly, the property
Located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, in the heart of the Bordeaux wine region, the estate benefits from a unique and diversified terroir. The soils of Château Haut-Bailly are mainly composed of deep gravel, characterized by layers of gravel mixed with clay.
These gravels provide excellent drainage and promote soil warming, creating ideal conditions for vine growing. The clay in the soil retains water and nutrients, allowing the vines to withstand periods of drought. This contributes to a regular ripening of the grapes and a concentration of flavours in the wines.
The vines benefit from a generous amount of sunshine thanks to south-southwest exposure, which favours an optimal ripening of the grapes and a good expression of the aromas.
Chateau Haut-Bailly grows mainly four grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Each grape variety is planted in the parcels best suited to its specific characteristics.
The influence of this terroir is reflected in the wines of Château Haut-Bailly. They are distinguished by their elegance, finesse and balance. The wines often have aromas of black fruits, blackcurrant, spices and liquorice, as well as a well-integrated tannic structure.

the know-how of château haut-bailly
The work in the vineyard is directed by the technical director of the domain, Gabriel Vialard, accompanied by his teams. Purity, charm and precision are translated into a gentle vinification. Manual harvesting to ensure the perfect maturity of the grapes, the sorting begins in the vineyard. After de-stemming, the grapes are sent to the sorting table where a second sorting is done before going to the vat.
The grapes are vinified in small parcels in order to preserve their individuality and their specific expression of the terroir. For the vatting, about thirty concrete tanks are used to follow the evolution of each batch during the fermentation. The teams strive to preserve the fruit and extract silky tannins by regulating temperatures and using gentle pumping over.
The wines are then carefully aged in French oak barrels from six selected cooperages for 16 to 18 months.

Château Haut-Bailly is renowned for producing exceptional wines that are distinguished by their finesse, complexity and ageing potential.
First, we have the Grand Vin: Château Haut-Bailly, which embodies the quintessence of the terroir. Made from a careful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this wine expresses the elegance and power of the Pessac-Leognan appellation. With a well-integrated tannic structure, and a complex aromatic palette of black fruits, spices and woody notes, this Grand Vin reveals all its splendour after a few years of ageing.
La Parade Haut-Bailly, renamed Haut-Bailly II in 2018, is the estate's second wine. Made from the same parcels as the Grand Vin, this cuvée, more accessible in its youth, offers a generous approach to the estate's expertise.
