The history of Château Malartic-Lagravière
The first known owner of the estate, always renowned for the quality of its terroir, was the family of Count Hippolyte de Maures de Malartic, who acquired the Domaine de la Gravière at the end of the 18th century. As an admiral under Louis XV, he defended the kingdom of France’s interests against the English. He was later appointed governor of the islands of Réunion and Mauritius in honor of his services. He died on one of these islands, and his flagship, La Minerve, would later inspire the château’s emblem.
In 1850, Madame Arnaud Ricard bought the estate and added the name Malartic to that of Lagravière in tribute to its previous owners. She also built the house that still forms the left wing of the château today. The estate was passed down and managed by the women of this family for 140 years. It was under their stewardship that the estate gained recognition as a Grand Cru Classé in both red and white wines during the 1953 Graves classification.
The estate's history continued with its acquisition in 1990 by the Champagne house Laurent-Perrier, which initiated a focus on quality with the creation of the second wine, originally named Le Sillage de Malartic.
The property took a major new turn when it was purchased by Brussels-based Michèle and Alfred-Alexandre Bonnie in 1997. They quickly restored the estate with the installation of a new vat room, a renovation of the facilities, the restoration of the château, and the purchase of former parcels. Today, Véronique and Jean-Jacques Bonnie are co-owners of the estate. They continue to adapt to various climatic and environmental challenges while continuing to elevate the wines of Château Malartic-Lagravière.
Château malartic lagravière terroir
Château Malartic Lagravière, a 73-hectare vineyard, is located on the outskirts of Bordeaux, on one of Bordeaux's oldest wine-growing terroirs, in the Pessac Léognan appellation. Situated on a high terrace carved out by the Eau Blanche stream and its tributaries, the Malartic croup is one of the most renowned and qualitative in the region. Composed of fine gravel mixed with shell limestone and clay, this layer provides excellent surface drainage. The subsoil of shell limestone, composed of fossils and clay veins, retains a large water reserve, ensuring a perfect water supply for the vines. The vineyard also benefits from optimal sunshine and reduced sensitivity to climatic variations, factors that are conducive to the production of great wines.
An exceptional terroir, the Bonnie family and the Château's teams take the utmost care of the vineyard and the surrounding environment. A commitment implemented since 1997 has led to more sustainable and respectful practices. They have also opted for sustainable agriculture, planting trees and hedges to protect the vines from the cold and provide a habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. The estate has also been certified High Environmental Value since 2015 and ISO 14001 via the EMS.

After several months of preparation, the vineyard is finally ready to be harvested. From late August to mid-October, the grapes are harvested by hand into small crates, depending on their ripeness, and then transported to the winery by tractor. The bunches are then cooled in cold rooms, sorted by optical sorting and poured by gravity into the vats. This is how the winemaking process begins.
Vatting times are generally short, to preserve the suppleness and tannic quality of the juices. The presses are meticulously worked to bring out the best-quality tannins, and alcoholic and malolactic fermentations take place in vats before moving on to barrels for ageing.
French oak barrels from the finest coopers are carefully selected to provide the support the wine needs during aging. Blending takes place at the beginning of the year following the harvest. This is a lengthy stage, involving the Bonnie family and their team in the creation of a great wine.
After blending, the wine continues to rest in an air-conditioned cellar containing 1,200 barrels, half of which are renewed each year by the best coopers. The whites are matured in a smaller cellar containing 200 different barrels: Bordeaux, Burgundy and 500-liter barrels. This allows us to refine the white wine with precision and accuracy.
Château Malartic Lagraviere vintages
A signature of a unique heritage, the Grand Vin of the estate, Château Malartic-Lagravière, is available in both red and white. The red Malartics are marked by a beautiful density, where the concentration is balanced by remarkable freshness. The vintages are harmonious, elegant, endowed with refined tannins, and develop a sublime aromatic power and great freshness. As for the white Malartic, it is also of very high quality. It exhibits a beautiful freshness and balance, combined with vibrant fruit and its velvety texture, offering a tannic structure that is both ample and complex, reflecting the true signature of the Malartic terroir.
The estate's second wine, Le Comte de Malartic, formerly known as La Réserve de Malartic, is available in both red and white and receives the same level of care. Le Comte Malartic red is a delicious and aromatic wine, predominantly Merlot. On the palate, it reveals lovely fruitiness and superb fullness. It can be enjoyed in its youth but also has good aging potential. Le Comte Malartic white is a fresh, highly aromatic wine, predominantly Sauvignon Blanc. Like the red, it shows beautiful fruit and fullness on the palate. It is also enjoyed in its youth, where its liveliness and delightful character shine.
