Château Gazin is a family wine estate that dates back to the 8th century. This 24-hectare vineyard in the Pomerol appellation is currently run by Nicolas and Christophe de Bailliencourt. It is 90% Merlot, typical of this wine-growing region, as well as Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines gradually acquire structure and complexity through contact with the fine lees and tannins of the oak, making them wines for laying down that improve over time. HISTORY
According to history, Château Gazin was a village in the 18th century, and probably occupied the site of the former "Hôpital de Pomeyrols". This hospital was recognised by the Knights as a refuge for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.
The Bailliencourt family, also known as Courcol, originated from the High Lords of Landas, whose coat of arms they proudly inherit. This family is one of the oldest in the Artois region of northern France. The nickname "Courcol" was bestowed on one of their ancestors by King Philippe-Auguste, King of France in 1214, in recognition of his valiant exploits during the Battle of Bouvines. The "fut par vertu Courcol" design was created following this event, and the descendants of the family still proudly remember this glorious history.
It was thanks to the initiative of Louis Salle, their great-grandfather, that Château Gazin was acquired. Today, his descendants are the fifth generation to own the Château and are dedicated to its management. They have taken great care to preserve and enhance this family heritage, perpetuating the tradition handed down on both their father's and mother's sides.
CHÂTEAU GAZIN,
THE PROPERTY
Situated on the high terrace of the Pomerol terroir, Château Gazin boasts a magnificent 26 hectares single-tenant vineyard.
The Château Gazin terroir consists of Günzian gravel on the surface, while blue and green clays containing iron oxides (crasse de fer) are found underground. Most of Château Gazin's terroir is formed by the gravelly clay subsoil of the Pomerol plateau. These clays, also known as smectites, ensure a regular and moderate supply of water for the vines, which is a characteristic of great terroirs.

At Château Gazin, the grape varieties reflect the typical characteristics of the right bank, with Merlot predominating (90%), accompanied by Cabernet Sauvignon (7%) and Cabernet Franc (3%) in the blends. The vines are on average 35 years old and are planted at a density of 5,500 to 7,000 vines per hectare. A respectful approach to the environment is favoured, with traditional practices such as ploughing, organic fertilisers and pest control using the "sexual confusion" method. The estate is also HVE 3 certified and harvests its grapes by hand.
FROM THE VINE
TO BOTTLING
THE HARVEST
The grapes are harvested by hand, plot by plot, when they have reached perfect ripeness. The grapes are first sorted by the pickers directly in the vineyard. Two further sortings are carried out in the vat room before and after separating the stalks, with the aim of improving the quality of the fruit obtained as much as possible.
FERMENTATION
Alcoholic fermentation is carried out with great care in small concrete vats, treating each grape variety and plot individually. The juices are then macerated with the skins for a period of two to three weeks. After this stage, the free-run wines and the pressing of the pomace, the juices from which are carefully kept separate.
The second fermentation, called malolactic, is carried out according to the quality of each batch of wine. It takes place either in barrels or in vats, taking into account the specific characteristics of each grape variety.
WINE AGEING
The ageing period lasts 18 months, during which the wines are gradually blended during regular rackings, carried out approximately every three months. The harvest is placed in oak barrels, 50% of which are new.
The contact between the fine lees and the tannins in the oak allows the wine to gradually develop the structure and complexity needed to become great wines for laying down, capable of improving with age.
THE GREAT WINE OF
CHÂTEAU GAZin
With a pleasant dominance of Merlot, the wines of Château Gazin have a feminine, seductive character. They are a pleasure to drink after a few years' ageing, but it is generally after 15 to 20 years that these sublime wines realise their full potential.
Château Gazin embodies the elegance and charm typical of the great wines of Pomerol. Its deep, harmonious purple colour reveals a broad aromatic palette of red and black fruits, evolving with age towards complex nuances of undergrowth, spice and leather. The palate reveals a fine tannic structure and subtle oak. Thanks to the charm of the Merlot grape, this wine can be enjoyed quickly, but should be kept for at least 15 years. This wine is sold mainly for export (over 86%), by the Bordeaux wine trade.
In 1986, the second wine, "L'Hospitalet de Gazin", was created to differentiate the batches from younger plots and express the typicality of the silty part of the vineyard. L'Hospitalet is an easy-drinking, seductive, fresh and fruity wine. It can be enjoyed the year after bottling or kept for many years.
