Located in the Bordeaux region, to the north of the village of Catussseau, Château Nénin is one of the largest and most remarkable estates in Pomerol. Founded in the eighteenth century by the Demay family, the Château covers 32 hectares of vines planted with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, giving the wines distinction and freshness. The estate's geographical location on the southern slopes of the Pomerol plateau provides ideal conditions for the vineyard's development. Since its purchase by Jean-Hubert Delon, the Château has undergone a major renovation of its vineyards and cellars, enabling it to realise its full potential.

L'HISTOIRE DU CHÂTEAU NÉNIN
Château Nénin produces some of the best-loved wines in the Pomerol appellation. Its origins date back to the 18th century with the Demay family, before passing into the hands of the Paillet and Despujol families in the 19th and 20th centuries respectively.
In 1997, just before the start of the harvest, Michel Delon acquired Château Nénin. Previously, this property had belonged to his cousins since 1847. Already the owner of Château Léoville Las Cases (Saint-Julien) and Château Potensac (Médoc), the Château undertook an in-depth restructuring of the estate. Major measures have been implemented, such as pruning, trellising the vines, draining the soil, planting or uprooting vines, and modernising the equipment. The ageing and storage cellars have been completely refurbished, enlarged and fitted with air-conditioning systems. What's more, a new vat room, featuring state-of-the-art technology, has been built to crown the total transformation of the estate.
Under the management of Jean-Guillaume Prats, who will be appointed Vice-Chairman in 2022, Domaines Delon also includes Châteaux Léoville Las Cases, Clos du Marquis and Château Potensac. Meanwhile, Château Nénin is now run by Jean-Hubert Delon, Michel's son.
LA PROPRIETE
Within the Pomerol appellation, it is rare to find vineyards with a surface area of more than 10 hectares. However, Château Nénin is an exception, with 34 hectares of vines in a single plot. This allows the terroir to benefit from the diversity of soils specific to the appellation. The neighbouring plots below are used to produce their second cuvée, Fugue de Nénin.
As a result, the terroir of Château Nénin encompasses the full diversity and uniqueness of Pomerol's soils. It is composed mainly of Oligocene deposits overlaid by gravelly alluvial formations from the Dordogne. There are siliceous clays and gravels, quartz, granite, iron dross and basalt pebbles. The vines of Château Nénin are grown on the sublime Pomerol plateau. The appellation enjoys an oceanic or temperate climate, with mild, rainy winters. Summers are relatively hot and sunny.
The majority of the grapes grown are Merlot (76%), followed by Cabernet Franc (23%) and a small crop of Cabernet Sauvignon (1%). The vines are 28 years old on average, and are planted at a density of between 6,300 and 7,100 vines per hectare. The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing precise selection at optimum ripeness. The vines are cultivated using traditional methods, paying particular attention to each stage of the process.

CHÂTEAU NÉNIN
The wines of Château Nénin are the fruit of a vineyard managed with exemplary rigour. They are vinified in a modern, innovative winery, overseen by the expert eye of Eric Boissenot, the estate's consultant oenologist.
The winemaking process at Château Nénin follows a traditional approach. After the harvest and selection of the grapes, vinification takes place over 12 to 20 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Clarification is carried out using egg whites, and the wines are then matured for 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with the percentage of new barrels used varying from vintage to vintage.
In recent vintages, 5% of the production has also been aged in TAVA amphorae, adding an extra dimension to the ageing process. This innovative method preserves the purity of the fruit in a more natural way.

Château Nénin wines are designed to preserve the freshness and ripeness of the fruit throughout their development. Particular attention is paid to the balance of acidity, which plays a key role in preserving the wine's thirst-quenching qualities. Ageing in new oak barrels adds empyreumatic nuances, but without ever dominating the natural flavours. The aim is to create a refined bouquet where these aromas blend perfectly with the fruity flavours. All the wines come from historic terroirs in the Bordeaux region, and are characterised by their capacity for ageing and their ability to improve over time.
Château Nénin embodies the quintessence of a great Pomerol vin de garde, harmoniously combining power, elegance, complexity and balance. The growing presence of Cabernet Franc in the vineyard gives the wine vibrant tension, unique distinction and remarkable freshness. Like all great Pomerol vins de garde, Château Nénin evolves magnificently over time, gradually revealing all its splendour and richness.
Fugue de Nénin, the Château's second wine, was first marketed in 1997. Fugues comes from young vines planted on the prestigious terroirs of the plateau and perfectly embodies the charm of Pomerol.
