Château Maucaillou, is a large wine estate located in the appellation Moulis en Médoc. Renowned and recognized since 1889, it achieved the classification of Exceptional Cru Bourgeois in 1932 for the quality of its wines. The vineyard is planted with the classic grape varieties of the Médoc region: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. These grape varieties make Château Maucaillou wines stand out with their sumptuous color, subtle and pleasantly fruity aromatic power. They are full-bodied, generous while remaining fine and elegant, reflecting a perfect balance. History of Château Maucaillou
The name Château Maucaillou comes from an old expression describing the sandy and gravelly soils of the Guntz region, dating back to a glacial period. Although these soils are not suitable for growing cereals and other crops, they are ideal for vine cultivation.
The château, built in 1875, is a unique architectural blend, combining elements of Renaissance style and "Arcachonnaises" villas. It is located in a privileged area between the Margaux and Saint Julien appellations, in the commune of Moulis, in the heart of the Haut-Médoc.
Due to its creation in 1875, it could not participate in the 1855 classification of the Grands Crus of the Médoc, which has remained unchanged since its inception, except for Mouton-Rothschild, which was upgraded from 2nd to 1st Cru Classé.
Château Maucaillou was classified in the first Classification of the Crus Bourgeois of the Médoc in 1932.
In 1929, Roger and André Dourthe bought Château Maucaillou and its 2.5 hectares of vines. A few years later, they founded the trading company Dourthe-Kressmann, which later became C.V.B.G.
Roger Dourthe expanded the vineyard to 32 hectares, and his son Philippe, a well-known figure in the Bordeaux wine scene, continued to expand the estate to its current 90 hectares. Today, Pascal Dourthe, with the help of his sisters Caroline and Magali, manages the estate and continues the family legacy.
Moulis en Médoc is one of the six appellations of the Médoc, along with Margaux, Saint Julien, Pauillac, Saint Estèphe, and Listrac-Médoc. It produces red wines primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.
