WINES OF PROVENCE
Wines from Provence are produced in the historic region of Provence, located in the southeast of France. The Provençal vineyard is situated between the Mediterranean and the Alps, stretching from west to east over 200 km across several departments (Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, and part of the Alpes Maritimes). It is in this sublime region that rosé, red, and white wines are produced, known for their fresh and fruity style. With a production of approximately 160 million bottles per year, the region is especially recognized worldwide for its rosé wines.
The History of Wines of Provence
The history of wines from Provence dates back to Antiquity, 2,600 years ago, when the Greeks founded the city of Marseille and began producing wine in the region. Historically, Provence is the very first vineyard of France. Over the centuries, wine production flourished thanks to the growth of maritime trade and the influence of foreign populations such as the Romans, Arabs, and the Counts of Provence.
In the 19th century, phylloxera, a devastating vine disease, severely damaged wine production in Provence. However, the region quickly rebounded through the reconstruction of vineyards and the modernization of wine production.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the production of rosé wine from Provence gained increasing popularity in France and worldwide. Provence rosé wines became synonymous with summer, simplicity, and elegance.
Today, wines from Provence are known for their quality and distinctive style, and the region is considered one of the largest producers of rosé wine in the world.
Provence wine appellations
Wines from Provence are produced in several different appellations, each with its own production rules and regulations. The main Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) for Provence wines are: Côtes de Provence, Coteaux Varois en Provence, and Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence.
The Côtes de Provence appellation is the largest of the three, covering 20,000 hectares, with 28% certified organic or HVE (High Environmental Value). Spanning 84 km, it extends over three departments: Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, and one municipality in the Alpes. The Mediterranean climate, characterized by unique and strong winds, supports vines planted on limestone terroir from west to east and crystalline terroir in the south and east. Rosés from Provence, representing 92% of wine production, are balanced between freshness and generosity with a persistent fruity finish. Red wines from Provence account for 4% and have a good tannic density with fresh fruit flavors for more indulgent wines. The white wines of Côtes de Provence are straightforward, based on Rolle, with a lot of freshness and floral and white fruit notes.
The Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence appellation covers just over 4,000 hectares, with 30% certified organic or HVE, and is spread across 47 municipalities between Var and Bouches-du-Rhône. Recognized in 1985, the vines in this appellation are the westernmost in Provence. The Mediterranean climate, marked by the Mistral wind, supports vines planted in varied soils (clay-limestone, stony, sandy, gravelly). Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence rosés are known for their volume impression and acidic structure. The red wines are more robust, evolving into indulgent and fruity wines obtained through cold maceration and short vatting. The whites, like the rosés, are fresh and very aromatic with fruity and floral notes.
The Coteaux Varois appellation covers 3,000 hectares, with 57% certified organic or HVE, spread across 28 municipalities in the Var department. Recognized in 1993, the vineyards of this appellation are located in the heart of “limestone Provence.” The continental climate supports vines growing at an altitude of 350-500 meters, surrounded by limestone rocky massifs blocking maritime influences. Coteaux Varois rosés are recognized for their salmon-pink color and aromatic palate (fruit, floral) with a beautiful balance between roundness and freshness. The red wines have a nice structure, marked tannins, and a pleasant freshness. The whites have floral and exotic fruit notes and a lovely balance between roundness and freshness.

THE TERROIR OF PROVENCE WINES
The terroir of Provence wines includes the hills and mountains of southeastern France, located between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The soils are varied and include limestone terrain, clay soils, and sandy soils. Generally, the soils of Provence are poor but well-drained. The shallow terrain without excess moisture is perfect for the vine.
The Mediterranean climate is ideal, offering mild winters and hot, dry summers, allowing the vines to ripen perfectly. There are many winds, which are part of the region's climate. The Mistral is the most well-known and the most violent. Particularly dry, it helps to cool the vineyard and protect it from moisture-related diseases.
The geography and climate of the region play an important role in the taste and quality of Provence wines. The limestone soils give the wines a distinct minerality, and the maritime winds bring freshness to the region, helping to maintain the acidity in the grapes.
THE GRAPE VARIETIES OF PROVENCE WINES
Provence wines are produced from many different grape varieties, each bringing its own unique aromas, flavors, and characteristics.
The most commonly cultivated red grape varieties in the region include Mourvèdre,, Cinsault,, Syrah,, Grenache, and Cabernet Sauvignon. For white grape varieties, they include Clairette, Ugni Blanc, Marsanne , Rolle, and Vermentino. Provence rosé wine is often produced from blends of red grape varieties such as Grenache, Cinsault, and Syrah.

THE KNOW-HOW OF PROVENCE WINES
The know-how of Provence wines is the result of several centuries of experience and innovation in producing quality wines. The winemakers of Provence are proud of their heritage and their commitment to producing high-quality wines.
It all starts in the vineyards with the harvest, which takes place in the second half of August. The grapes are harvested manually or mechanically at dawn to prevent them from spoiling, which would harm the aromas. Once harvested, the grapes are brought to the winery for vinification.
At the winery, the berries are quickly pressed to obtain a clear must. Fermentation is then carried out at low temperatures to preserve the fruity aromas and vibrant colors of the wine. For rosé wines, there are two main production methods: the traditional method and the saignée method. The traditional method involves mixing a small amount of red grape juice with white grape juice to obtain a pink color. The saignée method involves leaving the skins of red grapes in contact with the must for a short period, transferring the colors and aromas from the skins to the must. Depending on their style, Provence rosé wines can be made to be light and fruity or more complex and structured. Winemakers can choose from a variety of winemaking techniques such as skin maceration, malolactic fermentation, and oak barrel aging to achieve unique aromas and flavors.

ORGANIC WINES OF PROVENCE
The production of organic wines is increasingly popular worldwide, and Provence wines are no exception. Winemakers in the region are increasingly turning to more environmentally friendly production methods to craft their wines.
Organic wines are cultivated without the use of chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, or artificial fertilizers. Instead, winemakers use natural agricultural techniques such as cover cropping, organic fertilization, and biological control to protect their vines from diseases and pests.
The grapes used to produce organic wines in Provence are hand-picked and manually sorted to ensure only the best grapes are selected. Vinification is then carried out with the same care and attention to detail to preserve the quality and natural characteristics of the grapes.
Provence's organic wines are renowned for their superior flavor and quality, as well as their reduced environmental impact. The production of these wines responds to the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly products and demonstrates producers' desire to adapt to changing consumer needs.
Among the estates producing organic wines are Domaine de l'île, a historic vineyard in Porquerolles, certified organic since 2015, which adopts an agroecological approach to preserving biodiversity. The estate produces only a rosé and a white wine, both organic, offering freshness with citrus notes. Another notable producer is Domaine de Rimauresq, a classic of the Côtes de Provence appellation, which produces red, white, and rosé wines. The organic wines from this estate include the white and rosé from the Cuvée Classique. Château Léoube, located in the heart of one of Europe's most beautiful protected areas at Cap Benat, also produces excellent organic wines such as Love by Léoube rosé and Léoube rosé. Finally, Domaine de Triennes produces rosé, white, and red wines, with a few organic cuvées like Triennes Saint Fleur white and Triennes Saint Auguste red.
THE STYLE OF PROVENCE WINES
