PYM-RAE,
THE HISTORY
In January 2016, the Tesseron Family of the famous Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac, purchased Villa Sorriso, formerly the property of actor Robin Williams. He named the estate with his children's middle names, "PYM" and "RAE". The Tesserons decided to preserve this appellation in homage to this beautiful history, for the wine produced on the property.
For a family that owns renowned vineyards, it was crucial to choose a prestigious location. This is how Napa Valley in California was selected, but not just anywhere in the region. The heat of the climate had to be balanced by cooler local conditions, which made altitude essential.
To produce rich and harmonious wines, it was essential to have sedimentary soils, formed by marine deposits accumulated over millions of years. The Mount Veeder area offered this opportunity.
The vines were to be grown using Bordeaux grape varieties, similar to those grown in Pontet-Canet. In addition, they had to be old, because only old vines have deep roots allowing them to fully express the terroir and produce dense and complex wines.
However, this place was not the easiest to farm, with some steep and sloping areas. It only allowed low yields of grapes. Moreover, it was isolated, like a natural refuge in the middle of nowhere, requiring undeniable willpower to access it.
PYM-RAE,
THE VINEYARD
The vineyard, located at an altitude of 500 meters, covers an area of 7.5 hectares of vines. All of this land is being biodynamically converted by DEMETER USA, a process that demonstrates the deep commitment to environmentally friendly agricultural practices. The sedimentary limestone soils provide a suitable substrate for the cultivation of three emblematic grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. These vines, aged on average 30 years, draw their distinctive character from this unique terroir, giving birth to wines of exceptional quality.
A unique approach prevails here, highlighting the history of the vineyard and the winemaker rather than that of the cellar and the winemaker. Despite the links with Pontet-Canet, adaptation to the terroir leads to a unique method and practices to express the authenticity of a terroir. From this genetic similarity are born two distinct and incomparable wines.
A long-term vision guides vine cultivation and winemaking, considering them as inseparable, responding to each other and forming a coherent whole. The cycles follow one another endlessly, in a philosophy of virtuous circle and mutual respect, which is also reflected in the organizational structure. The practice of biodynamics is humanized, adopting an intimate and humble approach for confidential production, intended for a few initiates. This approach is the result of in-depth reflection, exemplary rigor and is validated by certification. It embodies balance and precision in all its aspects.

WINE-MAKING
LE CHAI
The essence of wine takes root from the vine. This hand-sewn approach also extends to the Chai. It consists of discerning the particularities of each plot. From the first year, in order to accelerate understanding of the vineyard, the entire team set up 40 concrete vats with a capacity of 10 hectoliters per vat.
The goal is to achieve increased precision, which will inevitably be reflected in subsequent assemblies. Humility, patience and perseverance are essential as it will take time to tame this environment and grasp the subtleties of the terroir.
The grapes are carefully sorted by hand above the vats to preserve the quality of the fruit, avoiding any alteration. Impeccable health of the berries is essential to obtain an exceptional wine.
The vineyard decides that no use is made of pumps or automatic temperature control. The extractions take place gently thanks to the use of small containers and careful gestures. Temperatures are monitored and adjusted manually, thus reinforcing this fundamental link: “each tank is considered a newborn”.
PYM-RAE,
The great wine
Pym-Rea was owned by Robin Williams, purchased by the Tesseron family from Château Pontet Canet in 2016 with the aim of creating an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley.
The grape varieties consist of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot. In the pure style of the great Bordeaux wines, Pym-Ray 2019 benefits from long aging in French oak barrels (55% new barrels) and 45% concrete vats. Aging lasted 18 months.
The management of the Property is 100% Biodynamic and currently undergoing certification by Demeter USA.
The vines are tended with the precision of a botanical garden, the cellar evokes a mysterious secret cave, while the wine in vats releases boundless energy and freshness. Each element is carefully orchestrated to highlight the exceptional potential of this rare vineyard, elegantly highlighting its singular character, marked by depth, balance and freshness.
