Château Martet
Château Martet: An Exceptional Estate in Bordeaux
History, Terroir, and Heritage
In 1991, Patrick de Coninck and Albert Michiels acquired Château Martet, a historic estate ideally situated on a hillside overlooking the Dordogne. Built in the 13th century as a hospice house for the Knights Templar to serve pilgrims on the Way of St. James, the estate boasts a heritage dating back to Roman times. From the moment of acquisition, Patrick and Albert set out to restore the vineyard’s nobility, initiating a complete restructuring between 1993 and 2006 to favor tall, low-density vines.
As early as 1998, by entrusting the project to Louis Mitjavile for viticulture and oenology, innovative techniques – such as cordon pruning, spring leaf thinning, green harvesting, and balanced leaf removal – enabled the production of exceptional yields, giving birth to benchmark wines like the Réserve de Famille and the iconic cuvée La Fierté de Mon Père. Following the passing of Patrick de Coninck in 2016, the family has passionately continued his legacy, further reinforced by the arrival of Nina Mitjavile in 2021.
Located on 37 hectares in the commune of Eynesse, the vineyard benefits from an exceptional terroir. The rich clay-limestone soils and iron-rich gravels, combined with a temperate continental climate, favor optimal ripening of the grapes. Situated within the AOC Sainte-Foy Côtes de Bordeaux in the heart of the Saint-Émilion region, the estate produces wines with a remarkably structured tannic profile, resulting from a rethought planting density of 5,500 vines per hectare.
Grape Varieties, Vinification, and Environmental Commitment
The excellence of Château Martet is reflected in the meticulous selection of grape varieties and a winemaking process tailored to this unique terroir. The vineyard is planted as follows:
- Red Varieties: 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet (Cabernet Sauvignon / Cabernet Franc)
- White Varieties: 60% Sémillon, 20% Sauvignon Gris, 15% Sauvignon Blanc, and 5% Muscadelle
Since 1992, the winery has been modernized and the cellars rethought to integrate innovative techniques: the installation of a pneumatic press, precise temperature control, and the use of stainless steel tanks to preserve the freshness of the white wines. The barrel cellar, established in 2003, houses 600 new oak barrels each year, ensuring a harmonious aging process for the red wines.
Mindful of the importance of the lifeblood of the land and the work of its people, Château Martet is committed to an environmentally respectful approach. Currently undergoing HVE3 certification, the estate uses no pesticides or chemical fertilizers and favors careful soil management to preserve biodiversity. This approach, combined with the passion and expertise passed down through generations, gives each bottle the authenticity of an exceptional wine.
