Central Valley - Puente Alto - Red Wine -Epu 2020 is the second wine of Almaviva, Chile's emblematic estate, born in 1997 from the collaboration between Philippine de Rothschild (owner of Grands Crus Bordelais, Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Clerc Million...) and Concha y Toro, Chile's wine emblem.
EPU 2020 is a sublime vintage accessible to discover the perfection of the wines of the star estate of Puente Alto.
Blending and aging:
Epu 2020 is made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon: 81% Carmenere: 12% Merlot 5% Cabernet Franc: 2%. The wine is aged in one year old French oak barrels that were used to age the first wine of the estate for 12 months.
Tasting notes:
The robe: deep and attractive ruby red
The nose: intense and precise, showing an elegant bouquet of berries, with characters of raspberry, red currant and blackcurrant that dominate on subtle notes of earth, licorice, tea and spices
The palate: full and silky, well balanced between freshness and ripeness, with soft and round tannins, faithfully expressing the terroir of Puente Alto. EPU 2020 is a perfect introduction to the exclusive and harmonious world of Almaviva
This second wine is praised by all critics, James suckling gave it a score of 94/100 and Robert Parker- Wine Advocate 94/100.
Focus on the 2020 vintage:
The 2020 vintage was a magnificent year for the estate, due to the particularly dry weather conditions. A vintage that will be remembered as one of the most difficult for the teams, but with a lot of effort, commitment and dedication, they were able to achieve an exceptional result. During this same winter period, temperatures were alternately lower and higher than usual, which resulted in a slightly later than expected bud break, mainly during the first two weeks of a cold October. Temperatures rose significantly in November, and remained at higher than usual levels throughout the spring and summer. Throughout the vegetative cycle, rain was expected and initially considered the main problem of the vintage. Paradoxically, the heat and the drought became a real blessing because they generated an early ripening process and forced the estate to naturally harvest earlier and faster than usual, under the pressure of the emerging pandemic. All the grapes were quickly harvested between March 13 and April 17, finishing 3-4 weeks earlier than usual. The particular conditions of the year concentrated the flavors in the berries, producing a wonderful 2020 vintage with lots of fruit, freshness, density and tension.
