Located in Saint-Julien, in the Médoc, 50km from Bordeaux, Château Léoville Poyferré is a second classified growth of 1855 and owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920. The 80-hectare vineyard, sitting on gravel terraces, produces elegant, fine, balanced wines with a velvety texture and excellent aging potential.

the history of
château Léoville Poyferré
The story begins in 1638 when Master Jean de Moytié, a nobleman from Bordeaux, owns a vineyard planted on a gravelly hill called Mont-Moytié. By inheritance, Blaise Antoine Alexandre de Gasq became the owner of the vineyard in 1740 and built a castle which he named Léoville. Important works were carried out there allowing to place this one in the first rank of the Medoc's growths. With approximately 120 hectares, the estate was then split into three.
In 1840, Jeanne de las Cases, heiress of part of Léoville, passed on her parcel to her daughter and her husband, Baron Jean Marie de Poyferré. The latter added his name to Léoville and thus created Château Léoville Poyferré, which a few years later was classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in 1855.
The estate was bought in 1920 by the Cuvelier family, who at the same time acquired Château Moulin Riche. Didier Cuvelier marked a turning point when he took over the general management of the family properties in 1979. He undertook a restructuring of the property located on a fabulous terroir and predisposed to excellence. Anne Cuvelier, in charge of wine tourism since 2006, has made the estate one of the pioneers of the Médoc. Today, Sara Lecompte Cuvelier is at the head of the estate and continues the passionate commitment passed on by her family.

Château Léoville Poyferré is an 80-hectare vineyard located in the Médoc, 50 km from Bordeaux, in the Saint-Julien appellation. Cradled by a microclimate, the vines, composed of several parcels, are planted on Mindel gravel terraces with a sandy-clay subsoil. This great diversity of soils is the source of the richness of the terroir and offers sublime palettes to compose exceptional wines.
2016 marks a turning point for Chateau Léoville Poyferré, in order to maintain a balance in the vineyard, the estate integrates the environmental management system of Bordeaux wines allowing the chateau to obtain the High Environmental Value certification of level three for the entire vineyard.

FROM THE VINE TO THE CELLAR
The work in the vineyard of the estate is directed by the vineyard manager Bruno Clenet, accompanied by his teams. Adaptation, attention and reactivity are key words at the property allowing a collective success. The vines are deeply rooted and benefit from the benefits of the terroir and the important work done on the soil, allowing a gentle alchemy and a return to the earth. Pruning is done by double guyot, a traditional method that respects the flow of sap and increases the longevity of the vines. Then, at the beginning of May, we take place "in green" actions with the elimination of the "chausserons", the disbudding, the early thinning out of leaves according to the needs.
A few weeks before the beginning of the harvest, the teams taste the berries to determine their maturity. A harvest plan is established and the work begins. The bunches are harvested by hand and then transported in crates to the vinification vat.
FROM THE CELLAR TO THE BOTTLE
The winery has 57 thermo-regulated stainless steel vats, 27 of which are double-walled to allow cold pre-fermentation maceration. When the grapes arrive at the winery, they are first sorted manually and then by optical sorting. They are then placed in vats according to their grape variety and plot. In order to protect the wine during the winemaking process, the property uses a bioprotection system based on non-saccharomyces yeasts since 2018. Then begins the pumping over, accompanying each tank until the end of the alcoholic fermentation.
Once the vinifications are completed and the vats run out, the wine is put in barrels for an aging period of about 18 months. Then comes the blending, allowing to compose the sumptuous wines of the château, where several traditional rackings take place in order to refine and soften the blends. This is followed by fining with egg whites and bottling.

The estate has two cuvées:
The Grand Vin, Château Léoville Poyferré, made from the four grape varieties in the vineyard, is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a wine full of finesse, balanced, with beautiful complexity and a velvety texture. It has a dense dark garnet colour. On the nose, it has aromas of violet, vanilla and wood. Finally, the palate is full-bodied and well-balanced with tannins and notes of black fruits.
The second wine of the château, Pavillon de Léoville Poyferré, benefits from the same care as the grand vin. Accessible from its youth, it is a charming wine, bright and crisp on the fruit. With a dark purple colour, it has an intense and fruity nose with blackcurrant and blackberry aromas. As for the mouth, it is mellow and with velvety tannins.
