Bordeaux - Pessac-Leognan - Cru Classé - Red Wine -In this 2021 vintage, Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte has been awarded scores above 95 by most tasters, including James Suckling, who gave it a score of 96-97. This is undoubtedly a great success for the vintage at the Château.
The Merlot grapes were picked at perfect ripeness, giving the wine substance and power, while the Cabernets add length and freshness.
The wine is an intense red, almost black in colour.
The nose is expressive, with aromas of black fruit (blackberry, blackcurrant, blueberry), followed by spicy notes (clove, cinnamon, liquorice) and hints of gunflint, very characteristic of gravel.
The palate is full, powerful, dense and concentrated, with great length. The finish is persistent and very long, with very silky tannins.
Blend for the 2021 vintage: 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot.
Maturing of the 2021 vintage: 18 months in barrels (60% new barrels made in the Château's cooperage).
12bottle tip: Once again, a great Pessac wine from the Cathiard family at Château Smith Haut Laffite. Decant 2 hours before tasting and this wine will keep for many years.
