In this 2018 vintage, Clos Saint Patrice is one of the standout successes of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, in a demanding climatic context. Here is the tasting note we made:
The Color: bright, deep ruby red.
The Nose: classic and enticing, revealing ripe red and black fruits, supported by spicy and slightly licorice notes.
The Palate: medium-bodied and well-balanced, with silky, enveloping tannins that deliver a lovely length. This wine should keep for at least 10 to 15 years.
This 2018 vintage of Clos Saint Patrice is made from a blend of and Mourvèdre. The vineyard benefited from heavy rains early in the season—demanding constant vigilance against mildew—followed by a hot summer with cool nights, allowing for excellent ripening. Harvested with 80% whole clusters, followed by a pre-fermentation maceration and fermentation in concrete vats, the process spanned nearly five weeks. Sixteen months of aging in concrete vats ensure a pure and precise fruit expression.
Elegantly crafted, Clos Saint Patrice owes its unique character to its very deep brown sandy terroir, dotted with yellow sand and rounded pebbles. This singularity translates into wines that are both full of character and aromatic finesse.
The 12bouteilles Advice: A superb Cru from the southern Rhône, Clos Saint Patrice 2018 benefits from decanting 1 to 2 hours before tasting, ideally paired with a fine cut of meat or game. Its silky tannins and elegant structure will undoubtedly allow it to age for around ten years or more. Notably, it received excellent critical acclaim: 94–96 points from The Wine Advocate and 92 points from Bettane & Desseauve.
