In this 2020 vintage, Saint Patrice is one of the finest Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines from this early and well-balanced year. Here is our tasting note:
The Color: deep ruby red, with delicately garnet highlights.
The Nose: a resolutely classic style, marked by well-ripened red and black fruits, peppery garrigue, and a few leather notes.
The Palate: medium-bodied, combining concentration and balance, with silky tannins and appreciable freshness. This wine shows substantial power (16% alcohol) and should age for at least 15 years.
This 2020 vintage of Saint Patrice comes from a particularly early and balanced year. After a mild spring that encouraged mid-May flowering, welcome rains in August ensured uniform ripening. Produced from a blend of Grenache Noir, Mourvèdre, and Syrah, the percentage of whole-cluster fermentation ranges from 30% to 60% depending on the grape variety, preserving the grapes’ full aromatic complexity. Pre-fermentation macerations and alcoholic fermentation in concrete vats, punctuated by gentle pump-overs and infusions, last for nearly five weeks. The 16-month aging in concrete vats, foudres, demi-muids, and French oak barrels refines the structure and brings a lovely depth to the wine. Before being released, Saint Patrice rests for 2 years in the cellar to perfect its harmony.
This cuvée displays all the charm of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir: clay-sandy soils predominantly made up of white clay, red clay scattered with rounded pebbles, limestone stones, and a few patches of yellow clay. Regular plowing and hoeing, late pruning, and controlled leaf-thinning ensure optimal ripeness. Awarded 93 points by James Suckling and 93 points by The Wine Advocate, Saint Patrice 2020 shines with its freshness, indulgence, and elegance.
The 12bouteilles Advice: A superb Cru from the southern part of the Rhône, best opened 2 hours before tasting to release its ripe fruit and spicy aromas. It will pair beautifully with a fine cut of meat or game and can be cellared for at least 10 years, or even longer, to develop even greater complexity!
