the history of cuvelier los andes
The history of this property dates back to 1998 when the family decided to expand into South America by purchasing land in the Mendoza region.
The estate was created by Bertrand and Jean-Guy Cuvelier, two members of the Cuvelier family who worked for many years in the wine industry in France. They decided to move to Argentina to produce high quality wines, using their experience and know-how acquired in France.
The first vineyard of Cuvelier Los Andes was planted in 1999, with an area of 35 hectares. The vineyard was planted with Bordeaux grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. These grape varieties were selected for their ability to adapt to the climate and soil of the region, as well as for their potential to produce superior wines.
Over the years, the estate has grown rapidly and has continued to plant new vineyards. In 2003, the estate purchased an additional 23 hectares of land, bringing the total area of the estate to 58 hectares. The additional vineyards were planted with Syrah and Chardonnay, as well as other Bordeaux varieties.
Cuvelier Los Andes quickly gained a reputation for superior quality wines. In 2005, the winery released its first vintage wine, Coleccion, which was well received by critics and wine lovers around the world. Since then, the estate has continued to produce a range of premium wines, including the Grand Vin, one of the estate's most famous wines.
Cuvelier Los Andes is now run by Bertrand Cuvelier's sons, Matthieu and Francois-Xavier, who joined the family business in 2005. Together, they continue to produce superior quality wines, while seeking to constantly improve their sustainable growing practices.
cuvelier los andes, the property
Located in the Uco Valley, in the Mendoza region of Argentina, the terroir of the estate is unique due to its geographical position and climate.
Located on the slopes of the Andes, at an altitude of 1000 meters. This high altitude creates a dry and warm climate with high daytime temperatures and cool nighttime temperatures. This variation in temperature creates ideal conditions for ripening grapes, especially for Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The soil at Cuvelier Los Andes is mainly clay and stony, which allows for good water retention and excellent root aeration. These soils are also rich in minerals, which contribute to the aromatic complexity of the wines produced by the estate.
The estate has several vineyards, each with unique characteristics. The main vineyard, located on the slopes of the mountain, is planted with Bordeaux grapes. The El Nevado vineyard, located at a higher altitude, is planted with Syrah. The Los Sauces vineyard, located at a lower altitude, is planted with Malbec.
Bordeaux varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, are particularly well suited to the region because of the ability of these varieties to adapt to the clay and stony soils and the dry, hot climate. Malbec, which has become the emblematic grape of Argentina, is also successfully cultivated at Cuvelier Los Andes.
The estate is committed to sustainable agriculture and uses environmentally friendly farming practices to preserve the health of the land and the quality of the grapes. The estate also uses modern winemaking techniques to maximize the quality and expression of terroir in the wines produced.
the know-how of cuvelier los andes
Winemaking at Domaine Cuvelier Los Andes is carried out under the direction of French oenologist Michel Rolland, who uses modern winemaking techniques to maximize the expression of terroir in the wines.
When the grapes are ripe, they are harvested by hand in small 12-kilo crates to ensure the integrity of the fruit. Upon arrival at the winery, the grapes are sorted by hand twice, then the berries are loaded by gravity into the fermentation tanks. When the tanks are full, the grapes undergo a 4 to 6-day cold maceration before alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The whole process lasts 30 to 40 days. Malolactic fermentation follows, either in vats or in barrels. Finally, depending on its concentration, the wine is aged between 12 and 18 months in traditional French oak barrels of 225 litres or 400 litres, which gives it adds complexity and depth.
cuvées of cuvelier los andes
The result is a range of exceptional premium wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Mendoza region. All the wines are elegant, balanced and rich in flavour, with a solid tannic structure and a long finish on the palate.
Cuvelier Los Andes "Grand Vin", the Flagship of the Estate
Grand Vin is the "first label", a wine that the estate likes to call the Argentine cousin of Chateau Léoville-Poyferré, the 2nd Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Julien, their family's most renowned estate in Bordeaux, France. Grand Vin is an exceptional Bordeaux-style blend, with an impressive tannic structure of our finest Malbec, round, balanced and complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Petit Verdot.
Following the Bordeaux tradition, "Colección" is the "Second Wine" after the "Grand Vin". Colección is similar to the Grand Vin but less concentrated and with less aging potential, so it is more friendly to drink young. In this blend, you can taste the concentration and intensity of a Mendoza wine and the elegance and finesse of a Bordeaux blend.
Cuvelier Los Andes "Grand Malbec
An emblematic grape variety of Argentina, Grand Malbec is a selection of our finest Malbec, fermented in barrels and aged in new barrels for 18 months. The Grand Malbec has an exceptional concentration that will surprise you with its balance and ageing potential. A must for all Malbec fans.
