the history of domaine du vieux télégraphe
In the village of Bédarrides, this magnificent family story began in 1891 with Henri Brunier. Known today as the owner of a large part of the south-eastern part of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, he donated to his son Hippolyte, parcels of land located on La Crau. At that time, the area was considered uncultivable because the density of pebbles made the soil ungrateful.
Claude Chappe, inventor of the optical telegraph, installed one of his relay towers and planted his first vines on this dominant plateau, where the wine vocation dates back to the 14th century. In 1821, Hippolyte's son Jules increased the estate to 17 hectares and gave the fruit of his labor the apt name of "Vieux Télégraphe".
Second of the name and fourth generation, it was Henri, at the end of the Second World War, who had the heavy task of rebuilding the entire estate in order to ensure its future. Not content with bringing the estate to 55 hectares in one piece, he gave this great classic of Châteauneuf-du-Pape its full dimension, giving it a "Vieux Télégraphe" style and positioning it on all the finest markets in the world.
In the early 1980s, the destiny of the family business was taken over by his two sons Frédéric and Daniel, where they now operate 100 hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, as well as 20 hectares in the Vaucluse and Ventoux PGI. In addition, Domaine Les Pallières, taken over in 1998 in partnership with their friend Kermit Lynch, represents 135 hectares in a single block in the Gigondas appellation, of which 25 are planted with vines.
In 2015 and 2016, it was the turn of Nicolas, son of Frédéric, and Édouard, son of Daniel, to enter the history of Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe where they incorporated key positions within the property. Manon, Frédéric's daughter, joined the team in 2018, to contribute in turn to the influence of the estate.
Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe and its associated vineyards, accompanied by the fifth and sixth generations of winemakers, have kept the wholeness as well as the original philosophy alive after more than 125 years of existence.

This real reference domain is located on the famous Crau plateau, the Mecca of Châteauneuf-du-Pape viticulture. The Vieux Télégraphe estate is run by the Brunier family. Of the 70 hectares that make up the estate, 65 are dedicated to red wines and 5 to white wines.
This exceptional terroir marks the wines with a very particular minerality, as if they had been filtered through the thick layer of rolled pebbles left behind by the melting of the Alpine glaciers, well before the formation of the Rhone Valley.
The soil, the mistral, the cold, the heat are all difficulties that will make the wine unique. The very old subsoil, coming from the melting of the alpine glaciers, located under the layer of rolled pebbles, gives the wines a beautiful minerality.
Among the different cuvées such as Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe (red, white), Télégramme (red), Piedlong (red), Clos Roquète (white), the Brunier family cultivates and vinifies different expressions of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape terroir, but also Les Pallières in Gigondas (rosé and red), Pigeoulet (red and white) and Mégaphone (red) in the foothills of Mont Ventoux. They also have a deep attachment to Grenache, a grape variety that has found a home in the Provençal region.
DOmaine du vieux télégraphe, a philosophy of an organic culture
The team of winemakers who work on the warm plateau of the Crau, as well as in the localities of Pignan, La Roquète, Piedlong, and on the steep, cold hillsides of the Pallières district, share a philosophy of sustainable, organic, reasoned viticulture.
They are convinced that the key to making a great vintage is to produce superior-quality fruit. To achieve this, they adapt each task to each parcel, paying particular attention to pruning, organic fertilization, traditional work, manual de-budding, green harvesting and leaf removal, all of which are carried out in a balanced way and adapted to each vine.
The winegrowers use treatments during the vegetation period that respect the rules of organic agriculture and that are reasoned in order to reach two main objectives each year: the production of wines without any residue and minimal external pollution.
To fight against the eudemis and the cochylis, the winegrowers follow the technique of "sexual confusion" since 1997, which consists in saturating the vineyard with female pheromones to prevent the male moth from going to mate. Harvesting is done manually and the grapes are sorted twice to provide the winemakers with the healthiest fruit possible, reflecting the philosophy of respect for tradition.
Terroir is a magical combination of natural and human elements such as climate, mistral, historical grape varieties, soils, feelings and exposure that reveal an expression and emit a unique vibration that cannot be reproduced by oenological techniques.

For the Brunier family, respect for the grapes is paramount, which is why the three wineries are integrated using the principle of gravity to receive the harvest, ensuring optimal treatment of the grapes until they reach the vats.
Just like their philosophy of vine cultivation, the estate has a philosophy of winemaking and ageing. This approach consists of carefully observing the grapes to detect their vinification line, thus creating a vintage that reflects the climate and events of the year.
The estate seeks to respect the customs of the appellation d'origine contrôlée by carrying out a traditional fermentation, while adjusting parameters such as de-stemming, pumping over, temperature, punching down and duration of fermentation to meet the requirements of nature and their expectations.

The Vieux Télégraphe Rouge, from a stony plateau in the Crau, originates in the southeast of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. This historic wine for ageing has a beautiful ruby/purple colour with purple highlights. The nose is intense and deep with a bouquet of red and black fruits with floral notes of white flowers. The palate is round, and woody with coated tannins and flavours of spice and liquorice.
The Vieux Télégraphe Blanc is a sublime wine, perfectly balanced and with a unique freshness worthy of the finest white wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is a pure marvel full of finesse, whose complexity and depth are incomparable.
Piedlong from Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe is a must-have in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. This wine comes from the stony plateau of Piedlong for the Grenache grape and from the Lieu-dit-Pignan for the Mourvèdre part. A Châteauneuf-du-Pape that will perfectly match richness and freshness as well as velvet and minerality.
The Telegramme red is a wine made from young vines of less than 30 years old but also from older plots not coming from the Crau and Piedlong plateaus. This wine is an exceptional nugget of Châteauneuf-du-Pape to be enjoyed in its youth, where the Grenache gives it a unique suppleness and roundness.
