This 2023 vintage of Les Chaillées de L'Enfer is made from 100% Viognier grapes from old vines (50 years on average) planted on biotite granite slopes in Condrieu. The vineyard, certified organic (Ecocert) and worked according to biodynamic principles, is entirely hand-grown (pickaxe and winch), with spontaneous grassing and single Guyot pruning.
The grapes, harvested by hand when fully ripe, are pressed whole, then fermented and matured for 15 months in foudres (15 hl) and barrels (10% new wood).
Tasting notes:
Colour: luminous and golden, with hints of green.
The Nose: a crazy charm driven by ripe fruit (apricot, pear, white peach) and citrus fruit, enhanced by floral notes (white flowers, rose, violet) and herbs (mint, thyme), followed by delicate spices (ginger, saffron).
Palate: taut, saline and iodised, with a lovely freshness. Racy and perfectly balanced, the wine expresses remarkable purity, combining firmness and tenderness.
12bouteilles advice: A superb Cru from the north of the Rhône, from the Vernay family. Open it an hour before drinking and serve it at around 10-12°C. It goes wonderfully with noble fish, shellfish or creamed poultry. It can be kept for between 2 and 10 years, or even longer for those who prefer more advanced notes.
This elegant flagship from Domaine Georges Vernay reflects exceptional expertise and sublimates all the typical characteristics of Viognier from a unique terroir. Long ageing on fine lees brings complexity and depth, while freshness remains the guiding principle of this exceptional Condrieu.
