Le Pied de Samson white is one of the finest expressions of the Collines Rhodaniennes, a terroir that reflects all the finesse and freshness of this grape variety.
This 2023 vintage, is made from 100% Viognier grapes. The vines, around twenty years old, are grown on granite slopes at an altitude of over 300 metres. They are certified organic and cultivated according to biodynamic principles.
The grapes are harvested by hand, then pressed as whole bunches. Fermentation takes place on fine lees, giving the wine its silky texture and beautiful depth. Maturing for 10 months in wooden truncated-cone vats (no new wood) preserves the purity of the fruit and respects the natural expression of the terroir.
Tasting notes :
Colour: brilliant pale yellow with subtle golden highlights.
Nose: intense, marked by floral notes (hawthorn, violet), ripe apricot and white peach, revealing all the aromatic complexity of Viognier.
Palate: full-bodied and delicious, balanced by a lovely liveliness. Delicate flavours of white-fleshed fruit mingle with a light minerality.
12bouteilles advice: A superb Rhône white from an iconic estate. Serve chilled (around 10-12°C) and decant if necessary to release all its aromatic nuances. It goes perfectly with grilled fish, scallop carpaccio or a platter of soft cheeses. Its ageing potential of 1 to 5 years will also allow you to enjoy it in the best possible conditions.
The elegant "Pied de Samson" owes its name to the legend of the giant Samson, who bent over to drink water from the Rhône and left his footprint near the estate. Excluded from the Condrieu appellation when the geographical area was revised, these hillside plots nevertheless continue to produce a remarkable Viognier, combining freshness and complexity.
