Domaine Stéphane Ogier owes its name to the Ogier family, owners of the estate for 7 generations. Stéphane, son of Michel Ogier, took over the destiny of the estate in 1997. Located on the slopes of Ampuis in the heart of Côte-Rôtie, the vineyard has become a key figure in the appellation. Stéphane Ogier produces great wines by sublimating the terroirs to make wines that are always elegant with great finesse. Each year, the parcels are vinified separately to bring out the best of their potential.

the history of domaine stéphane ogier
Originally from the Côte-Rôtie, the Ogier family has lived on the land for over 6 generations. Polyculture has been practised through the generations, mainly by grapes and apricots. The estate has sold most of its grapes, and only a few bottles of wine are produced in concrete tanks at the Michel and Stéphane Ogier estate. Michel Ogier launched a wine in 1983 when the Côte-Rôtie appellation was booming.
Initially, he started cautiously with a small volume of six barrels and year after year he built up a loyal clientele, 80% of whom were foreign. After 6 years, he stopped selling to wine merchants and vinified his own wines. In the 1980s, he acquired land in the north, even though it was not part of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. Michel Ogier was among the first to produce the Vin de Pays cuvée on this land.
In 1997, just after his 20th birthday, Stéphane Ogier joined his father at the head of the family estate in Ampuis. For many years, the vine has been anchored in the family, in a polyculture environment well known in this northern Rhône valley, where fruit trees were once more praiseworthy than wine. Stéphane retained "the old-fashioned way" from his father as he trained in viticulture-oenology in Beaune and travelled elsewhere (from Burgundy to South Africa), bringing new blood and quickly stimulating the development of the operation.
In 2014, Domaine Stéphane Ogier as a new adventure by inaugurating its new facilities facing the Côte-Rôtie, replacing his parents' old winery with an ultra-contemporary vat house and cellar, responding more effectively to the estate's expansion and the winemaker's quest for precision.

The surface area of the vineyard is composed of 14 hectares on a sublime mosaic of plots including in the most emblematic places of the appellation Côte-Rôtie, notably on the Côte Blonde and the Côte Brune.
In 2007, he inaugurated his new parcels in Condrieu, where he now owns 5 hectares. In addition, new vines in Saint-Joseph, in Collines Rhodaniennes (where "Syrah d'Ogier" is produced in Vin de France) but also in Côtes-du-Rhône méridionales complete this exceptional domain.
The young winemaker decided just after to expand to 27 hectares on the vineyards of Cairanne and Plan-de-Dieu to continue developing his very gourmet cuvée "Le Temps est Venu".
Stéphane has met with the principles of organic farming within the property, but he does not wish to be limited by the constraints of a certification. Today, working the soil is a priority for him despite the difficulty of having very sloping vines like his. To do so, he uses techniques such as horse and winch and teams working with pickaxes.
However, these methods involve very high labour costs where extra effort is required in this region. Stéphane has thought about a solution coming from the air with the implementation of drones for vine treatments as soon as legislation will authorize this practice.
The philosophy of domaine stéphane ogier
A skilled and experienced winemaker as a result of his background, Stéphane has mastered the winemaking techniques used in Burgundy. The signature of his wines is always in search of finesse and elegance.
During all these years, the domain has never stopped questioning itself in order to be more attentive to the expression of the terroirs and to review its approach to maturation. It favours more and more demi-muids to reduce the use of new wood, or almost not.
2017 was a landmark year for the vineyard, where alcohol levels began to rise sharply. One of the reasons the estate has tried to contain the effects of climate change is through their viticultural approach but also through their winemaking by continuing to focus on pure, digestible and elegant wines while maintaining their Northern Rhône identity.
The patience of the winemaker also allows them to learn and to be able to evaluate, the desire to favour very long maturation between 24 and 36 months on the great vintages now enables them to keep them for several years in the cellar before marketing them. For them, the means implemented through the wine-making process of their wine, require time to express their subtlety and to reveal the best of their potential.
the main cuvées of domaine stéphane Ogier
The plot-based cuvée "La Belle Hélène" is one of Stéphane Ogier's rare gems. Produced with only 2200 bottles, this real treasure symbolizes the excellence of the terroirs of Côte-Rôtie where power and emotion are intertwined with finesse and poetry. Made from 100% Syrah, this wine is aged for 20 months in oak barrels.
Mon Village " Côte-Rôtie " is a must-have from the Stéphane Ogier estate. A rising star in the appellation, Stéphane produces a magnificent wine from his young vines. The richness and juiciness make the Côte-Rôtie a wine that is already very pleasant to drink for lovers of fruity and gourmet wines.
"L'Âme Sœur" is also one of the most emblematic wines of the domain. This wine is produced in the appellation IGP Collines Rhodaniennes on soils of micaschists, chlorites and gneiss oiled from the steep lands of Seyssuel. With its delicate and silky tannins, it is one of the most surprising red wines of the domain.
2023 will be an important year for the Domaine Stéphane Ogier where a very symbolic double anniversary will take place. Indeed, they will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first bottling of their wine as well as the 80th birthday of Michel Ogier, founder of the domain.
