In this 2021 vintage, Cigalus Rouge ranks among the finest wines produced by Gérard Bertrand under the IGP Pays d’Oc, once again showcasing the domain’s expertise in a remarkable year. Here is our tasting note:
The Color: a deep ruby red with mahogany highlights.
The Nose: classic and powerful, marked by very ripe black fruits (blackberry, black cherry, plum), grilled spice notes, and roasted oak tones.
The Palate: opulent and luxuriant, with velvety tannins. These black fruit aromas are joined by a complex empyreumatic profile (charred, toasty) and a hint of mint. The balance is perfect, offering a lovely long finish, and it promises at least 15 years of aging potential.
This 2021 vintage of Cigalus Rouge is a blend of , Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Caladoc, and Carignan, sourced from vines farmed biodynamically since 2002. Yields are kept under control (around 25 hl/ha), thanks to 15-year-old vines, short cordon de Royat pruning, and green harvesting if necessary. After a precise alcoholic fermentation and meticulous grape sorting, the wine undergoes aging in new 225-liter barrels, where malolactic fermentation and further élevage take place before blending. It is then aged in bottle for at least a year before release.
Elegantly crafted, this 2021 Cigalus Rouge perfectly embodies the style sought by Gérard Bertrand: a full-bodied, refined, and perfectly balanced wine. Benefiting from a hot, sunny Mediterranean climate offset by the depth and natural coolness of the soils, the vines enjoy a subsoil water reserve that ensures optimal phenolic ripeness for all grape varieties.
The 12bouteilles Advice: A top-tier wine from Languedoc, ideally opened 2 hours before serving to allow its aromatic complexity to fully unfold. Serve at 16°C with roasted red meats, poultry in sauce, or aged cheeses. It has an aging potential of at least a decade—perhaps even longer!
