The history of domaine mas de la séranne
In 1998, Jean-Pierre Venture relaunched his remarkable adventure as a winemaker with the creation of the sublime Mas de la Séranne estate. It all started with the acquisition of 5 hectares of vines on the renowned terroirs of Aniane and then he decided to further expand the estate where he now owns about 17 hectares.
The story began when two wine enthusiasts, Jean-Pierre and Isabelle Venture, decided to return to their native Languedoc region to develop Domaine Mas de la Séranne. The name of the estate refers to the nearby hill range, in particular to the Séranne, the first foothill overlooking the Montpellier coastline.
It is therefore quite natural that Jean-Pierre and Isabelle made the choice to change their life more than 20 years ago in order to settle in a place favourable to wine growing. This place is particularly well adapted to the culture of the vine. Jean-Pierre, a food engineer by training, studied viticulture and oenology for one year in order to complete his skills in this field.
Convinced of the intrinsic qualities of the Terrasses du Larzac, the winemaker assumed the presidency of the appellation for nine years. During this period, he became the most fervent defender and promoter of this fascinating appellation.
In only 20 years, Mas de la Séranne quickly acquired a serious reputation where the domain became one of the spearheads of the Terrasses du Larzac appellation. Nevertheless, Jean-Pierre is not satisfied with this success and decides to inaugurate new grape varieties on experimental plots with the main objective of replacing or complementing certain varieties that have become unsuitable due to climate change.
In 2012, Domaine Mas de la Séranne is certified as "organic", thus meeting the French quality standards FR-BIO10.
Mas de la séranne, the property
The Mas de la Séranne estate, named after the range of hills above it, is located in Aniane, an ancient wine-producing village 30 km northwest of Montpellier.
The terroir is in the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac region, an appellation renowned for the aromatic richness and liveliness of its wines, which are attributed to the significant temperature variations between day and night, which can exceed 20°C in the summer.
The Terrasses du Larzac appellation has a terroir made up of three types of soil:
- The Yellow Marls of Gignac are sandy-limono-clay soils and allow to give red wines with supple and fruity aromatic profiles as well as beautiful white wines.
- The soils of the ancient terraces of the Hérault are mainly composed of rolled pebbles but also 40% of red clay.
- The colluviums at the bottom of the slope are limestone pebbles resting on a layer of red clay. They offer soils of exceptional quality, combining both power and finesse, as well as a wide range of aromas.
The estate draws its typicity from the types of soil present on its terroir, which gives the wines aromas of ripe fruit and spices, as well as an elegant structure supported by subtly fine tannins. In addition, the specificity of the appellation "Terrasses du Larzac", which is distinguished by the complexity and freshness of its wines.
Domaine Mas de la Séranne benefits from a variety of grape varieties, with Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, that is to say all the grape varieties of the AOC " Terrasses du Larzac " for the red wines. As for the white wines, they are made from Roussanne, Vermentino and Grenache Blanc.
Two hectares, called "Les Brousses", have been developed with 9 grape varieties of Greek and Italian origin, as well as late and ancient varieties such as piquepoul noir, rivairenc, carignan, morastek and terret bouret blanc. This experimental plot is being closely monitored by the appellation, with the aim of determining which grape varieties will be best adapted to future climate changes. At the same time, restoration work is underway on the old farmhouse located on this parcel, and fences have been reinforced to protect the vines from wild boars.
the know-how of mas de la seranne
The vineyard is particularly sensitive to the principles of biodynamic viticulture, which is why Jean-Pierre is strongly inspired by it, using products such as herbal infusions to complement his treatments of the vines. They also perform operations such as topping, tilling, grafting, planting and bottling according to the lunar calendar.
At Domaine de la Séranne, the grapes are harvested manually, and each grape variety and each plot of land is vinified separately in order to promote the aromatic complexity of the wines. The cellar, naturally air-conditioned because it is covered with earth and dug into the rock, houses 60 barrels of 300 litres each, filled by gravity without pumping. Observation, patience and passion for the job are precious assets that contribute to the exceptional quality of the wines produced on the estate.
The different wines of Mas de la Séranne are not only rich but also very singular. Thanks to the particularity of the Terrasses du Larzac, these wines are distinguished by their great character linked to the degree of alcohol as well as a remarkable freshness, due in large part to the altitude of the terroir (1000 meters). This gives the wine an exceptional balance and complexity.
The name given to each of the cuvées symbolizes the nature that surrounds them with the wild cherry trees that frame the plots of land of the domain, but also small immortals bloom in May near the vines of the Mas.

main vintages of domaine mas de la seranne
The Mas de la Sérane "Clos des Immortelles" is the flagship wine of the domain. This red wine is produced from Syrah, Grenache, Morrastel, Mourvèdre and Carignan. It is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels and offers aromas of red and black fruits as well as spice and liquorice.
The "Antonin and Louis" cuvée was named in honour of their respective winemaking ancestors, great-uncle and grandfather. The Mourvèdre and Syrah grapes are grown on the ancient terraces of the Hérault River while the Carignan is grown on very poor terraces dating from the Tertiary era. All these soils represent a strong presence of pebbles, which gives the wine a unique power and elegance.
The Mas de la Séranne "Les Griottiers" produced in AOP Languedoc is naturally called "Les Griottiers" like the wild cherry trees that grow near the grenache vineyard. Since the first vintage, this cuvée has always been characterized by aromas of morello cherries in brandy.
