THE HISTORY OF MAISON MICHEL chapoutier
Located on rue de l'Hermitage in Tain, Maison Calvet et Compagnie was founded in 1808. In the early 1950s, Octave Calvet and Frédéric Vogelgesang took over the premises and continued their partnership until 1878.
In 1883, the company was bought by Rodolphe Delépine, who decided to join forces with Marius Chapoutier to create Delépine & Chapoutier. The wines were then exported to the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. Rodoplhe Delépine was mainly responsible for the financial side of the business and retired in 1922.
Following this event, Marius decided to change the name of the company to Chapoutier & Cie. A few years later, he acquired the La Ciboise estate (1.15 hectares) from the famous writer Robert Monier de la Sizeranne.
In 1929, Marius built the new Cuverie M.Chapoutier at the foot of the Hermitage hill. Following his death in 1937, his son Marc succeeded him with determination, taking up the dreams of the family business. Driven by his desire to give his business a unique dimension, Marc Chapoutier decided to give it the name that still resonates today: "M. CHAPOUTIER".
At the end of the 1980s, Michel Chapoutier introduced the first plot-based selections as winemaker, marking a turning point in the history of the House. In 1990, he took over the reins of the company, instilling his fundamental vision and conviction: the practice of biodynamic viticulture.

In 2009, M.CHAPOUTIER took the strategic decision to set up in Alsace and also inaugurated its new production site in Tain. This expansion gives them a solid base from which to further expand their business. In 2014, they acquired a sales cellar in the prestigious Halles Paul Bocuse in Lyon. The following year, Michel decided to expand his winegrowing footprint by setting up operations in Beaujolais and Provence. That same year, they made three key acquisitions with Maison Trenel, an estate in the Gard region and a hotel complex in Tain. In 2016, they made their first purchase of vines in Spain and also became the owners of another wine cellar in the Halles d'Avignon.
Today, the new generation, Mathilde and Maxime, have joined Corinne and Michel Chapoutier to ensure the continuity of a family business. Together, they share a unique vision of the world of wine and a philosophy of preserving the terroirs. They are committed to preserving the convictions that have made M.Chapoutier the most admired French wine brand in the world.
THE MAISON MICHEL CHAPOUTIER
For Michel Chapoutier, revealing terroirs is an essential factor in producing unique wines. He explores regions and terroirs where no one else would dare venture, such as the Rhône Valley, the birthplace of the House, as well as Roussillon, Australia and Portugal.
To create a terroir, we had to find a specific region with a soil and climate suited to a specific grape variety.
The geographical location of Maison M.Chapoutier offers exceptional potential. Roussillon is one of the most prestigious terroirs in France, where the terraced hills and stony soils provide a rich geology. The climate, an essential element for human cultivation, has inevitably captivated Michel Chapoutier.
Since the early 90s, Michel Chapoutier has attached great importance to biodynamic viticulture. In 1991, he made the momentous decision to apply biodynamic methods to his vineyards, even though he knew he might be misunderstood. However, he is driven by the conviction that he is revealing the true essence of the terroir. That's why he makes it his main objective to give full expression to the richness of the flavours.

THE maison M.CHAPOUTIER, INVALUABLE EXPERTISE
Respect is at the heart of everything we do. It means respecting the terroir, the exceptional harmony between the soil, the climate and the work of man. It also means respecting the land by anticipating its needs and taking care of it. You have to show constant respect for the plant and the fruit at all times, right up to the harvest. Without a doubt, it is vital to respect the consumer, whatever his or her wine education. Because without respect, wine loses its soul, its deepest essence.
Michel Chapoutier is a fervent advocate of biodynamic agriculture. He has converted all his vineyards to this environmentally-friendly approach. Michel sees biodynamics as a way of working in harmony and understanding the cycles of the earth, the sun and the moon, and of sleeping and waking. Through this, choices are made, such as when to prune and when to harvest.
The House seeks to capture the essence of the soil, climate and local conditions in each bottle. They produce mono-parcel wines, which means that they vinify raisins from different parcels separately, in order to retain their very specific characteristics.
Mr Chapoutier selects his raisins meticulously, paying particular attention to optimum ripeness and quality. The grapes are harvested by hand, enabling a precise selection of the ripest and healthiest sultanas. Michel Chapoutier's expertise is also evident in the vinification of his wines. He uses both traditional and modern techniques to extract the best from the raisins, while preserving their purity and balance.
THE GREAT WINE OF
m.CHAPOUTIER
Maison CHAPOUTIER produces a wide range of wines, from regional appellations to grands crus. All the wines are widely appreciated for their quality, their expression of terroir and their ability to age gracefully. Michel Chapoutier is considered to be one of the greatest winemakers of his generation and his influence on the world of wine is considerable.
M.CHAPOUTIER - Ermitage "Le Pavillon" is one of the House's most sublime cuvées. This red wine is produced in the prestigious Ermitage appellation in the Rhône region. It is made from 100% Syrah grapes from century-old vines grown according to biodynamic principles. With its intense red colour and violet highlights, this cuvée offers aromas of raspberry, blackberry, walnut and liquorice, with velvety tannins and a long, balanced finish. This impressive red wine can be enjoyed now or kept for many years.
M.CHAPOUTIER - "Barberac" is a Châteauneuf-du-Pape produced by Maison M.CHAPOUTIER. This parcel-based cuvée is located on the western edge of the appellation, in what Michel describes as a hot, dry spot. This 100% Grenache red wine comes from vines over 90 years old. The wine is magnificent, full-bodied and round. With impressive length, Grenache, the unique grape variety of this great wine, reveals itself.
M.CHAPOUTIER - "Invitare" Condrieu Blanc is a white wine produced in the famous Rhône region. It is made in the Condrieu appellation from the emblematic Viognier grape variety. The raisins are hand-picked when they are at optimum ripeness. The soils, composed of weathered schist and granite, give the wine exceptional aromatic power and complexity. In addition, these types of soil bring freshness and minerality to the wine.
